Signs Your Website Has Been Hacked

Some are obvious, some are sneaky

Strange redirects

Visitors get sent to spam, gambling or fake prize pages.

Google warnings

A red warning page appears or search results say the site may be hacked.

Odd search listings

Google shows pages you never made, often in another language.

Unknown users

New admin accounts appear in WordPress that nobody created.

Host suspension

Your hosting company has disabled the site or sent a malware notice.

Spam emails

Your email or contact form starts sending junk to strangers.

Slow or broken

Pages load slowly, show errors or the layout falls apart.

Can't log in

Your password stops working or the login page has changed.

What to Do Right Now

Before I get started

Don’t panic and don’t delete everything. A few quick steps help limit the damage and make the cleanup easier.

How I Clean Up a Hacked Website

Thorough, not just a quick patch

A rushed cleanup often misses hidden files and the hack comes straight back. I work through the site carefully.

1

Assess

I take a full backup of the infected site, then look at how far the infection has spread and how the attacker got in.

2

Clean

Malicious code, fake users and backdoor files are removed. WordPress core files are replaced with clean copies.

3

Secure

Passwords are reset, outdated plugins updated or replaced and the original weak point is closed.

4

Recover

I request a review from Google to remove warnings and check the site is clean in search results.

Keeping It From Happening Again

Most hacks are preventable

Most hacked WordPress sites I see have one thing in common. Plugins or themes that were left without updates for a long time, often with a known security hole. Others come down to weak passwords or nulled themes downloaded from dodgy websites.

After a cleanup I lock the site down. Login attempts are limited, file editing in the dashboard is switched off, unused plugins are removed and everything left is updated. I also set up regular backups so a future problem can be rolled back quickly.

The best protection is ongoing care. My Business WordPress maintenance plan at $99 a month includes daily backups, weekly security scans, uptime monitoring and hack recovery, so if anything does slip through, the fix is already covered.

When a Cleanup Isn't Worth It

Sometimes a fresh start is cheaper

If a site is very old, built on abandoned plugins or has been hacked more than once, cleaning it can cost more than rebuilding it. In that case I’ll tell you honestly and quote both options. A website redesign gives you a clean, modern site with your content carried across and your old addresses redirected.

I repair hacked websites for businesses right across the state, from Launceston and the West Tamar to Devonport, Hobart and Strahan. Everything is done remotely, so I can start as soon as I have access.

Who fixes hacked WordPress websites in Tasmania?

Website Design Launceston fixes hacked WordPress websites for businesses across Tasmania, with every cleanup done by Nick Fritzkowski. Nick removes malware and backdoors, closes the security hole that let the attacker in and requests a Google review to clear warnings. All work is done remotely, so location doesn’t matter.

Most Launceston websites get hacked through outdated plugins or themes with known security holes, weak or reused passwords or pirated themes that come with hidden malware. Small business sites are rarely targeted personally. Automated bots scan the internet for any site with a known weakness and attack it.

Fixing a hacked website in Tasmania usually takes a day or two once I have access, depending on how badly the site is infected. Clearing Google warnings can take a little longer, because Google needs to review the site after the cleanup. I keep you updated throughout.

Google removes the hacked or dangerous site warning from a Launceston website once the site is clean and a review is requested through Google Search Console. Reviews are often processed within a few days. Any spam pages the hackers created also need removing so they drop out of search results.

A hacked Tamar Valley website can often be restored from a clean backup, but only if the backup was taken before the infection and the original weakness is fixed afterwards. Otherwise the hackers get straight back in. Regular backups are part of every maintenance plan.

Stopping a Tasmanian website from being hacked again comes down to regular updates, strong unique passwords, trusted plugins and regular backups. After a cleanup I harden the site and recommend ongoing maintenance. The Business plan at $99 a month includes hack recovery if anything gets through.

Hacked website repair is covered for Launceston businesses on the Business and Elite WordPress maintenance plans from Website Design Launceston, which cost $99 and $189 a month including GST. Sites without a plan can still be cleaned up, with the job quoted once I have assessed the damage.
